Arts & culture
Arts, cultural programs, and institutions flourish in Peterborough, including the nationally acclaimed artists’ retreat, the MacDowell Colony; a well-known summer stock theater, the Peterborough Players; Monadnock Music and Apple Hill Chamber Music, offering some of the best classical music programs outside of Boston and New York; a downtown treasure, the Mariposa Museum of World Cultures; and the Sharon Arts Center, with its fine art gallery and craft shop.
The area has numerous arts opportunities for children and teens including theater, dance, instrument instruction, a children’s choir, an art academy, and a school of arts and crafts at the Sharon Arts Center. MacDowell in the Schools and the district’s Arts Enrichment program offer artist-in-residence programs, performances, and many other activities in the schools. The annual springtime Children and the Arts Festival brings thousands of people to downtown Peterborough to experience youth theater, dance, and music performances.
