What is a "green" home?

The homes at Nubanusit are environmentally designed, quality built, and super energy-efficient. The Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) United States Green Building Council awarded one of our homes (as a model for the neighborhood) its highest certification, LEED Platinum. All of our homes have the base features that lead to that certification in 2008:

Super-insulated underground pipes carry heat and hot water to each home from the centralized wood pellet fired boiler system.
  • Energy efficient lighting and the widespread use of daylighting create bright interiors with low energy input. 
  • Superior insulation, triple-glazed windows, and airtight construction.
  • Fresh-air ventilation with heat recovery reduces heating costs while achieving very comfortable living environments. 
  • Low-VOC building materials with particular attention to interiors.
  • Low-flow fixtures and dual flush toilets. 
  • Heat recovery on the warm wastewater lowers hot water costs. 
  • The central pellet boiler plant uses a locally produced biomass fuel instead of imported fossil fuels to provide heat and hot water. 
  • Roofs oriented towards the sun to support solar collectors for electricity and hot water. 
  • The buildings are designed and detailed to be durable and low maintenance. 
  • The site design preserves the farm fields, riverfront, and woodlands for wildlife, recreation, and food production.
